By the Fireplace is a woody fragrance for women and men, made for Maison Martin Margiela by Marie Salamagne in 2015. It does what the name says: smoky guaiac wood and roasted chestnut over clove and pink pepper, then vanilla, Peru balsam and cashmeran soften it into something warm and faintly powdery rather than sooty. Sweet enough to read as comfort, woody enough not to be a dessert. It lasts a moderate while and projects moderately, sitting close once it settles. Autumn and winter evenings.
