Velvet Orchid is an oriental floral for women, created for Tom Ford in 2014 by Yann Vasnier, Calice Becker, Shyamala Maisondieu and Antoine Maisondieu, and built to carry on from Black Orchid, which the house launched in 2006. Rum and honey open it boozy and thick over mandarin, then an enormous floral heart arrives with Turkish rose oil and jasmine wrapped around the orchid accords. Peru balsam, myrrh, labdanum and suede make the base dark and resinous. Opulent, and not remotely discreet. It lasts a long time and projects strongly, and it belongs to autumn and winter evenings.
