Antaeus is a woody chypre for men, composed by Jacques Polge for Chanel in 1981 and named after the Greek demigod. The opening is herbal and bitter, clary sage, myrtle and coriander over lime and Amalfi lemon, and thyme and basil carry that through a heart where rose and jasmine sit further back than you expect. The base is the character of the thing: castoreum and labdanum with oakmoss and patchouli, animalic, leathery and dark. It lasts a long time and projects strongly, and it belongs to autumn and winter evenings.
