Opium (1977) is an oriental spicy fragrance for women, created for Yves Saint Laurent by Jean Amic, Jean-Louis Sieuzac and Raymond Chaillan. Cloves, pepper and coriander open it hot and dry over plum and mandarin, then carnation and cinnamon keep the spice going through a heart of rose, peach and orris root. The base is enormous: incense, myrrh, opoponax and labdanum with vanilla, castoreum and sandalwood beneath them, balsamic and smoky. Nothing about it is modest. It lasts all day and fills a room, and it belongs to autumn and winter evenings.
